Jon’s new Job

Jon Moore Doer of the Month

Jon Moore is an IT specialist from Bath; he created a campaign on Do Nation right at the end of August and flew from zero to hero within a matter of days, earning the title of Doer of the Month.  Here we caught up to hear more about this unusual campaign.

What made you decide to raise pledges through Do Nation, and how did you hear about it?

I met Hermione at The Big Feastival on a depressingly wet afternoon in the “Village Hall Tent” where she was giving a talk on Do Nation (I was there by chance escaping the rain). Whilst my wife volunteered me to make a pledge straight away I was really taken with what a powerful tool it was: “I don’t want your cash, just 2 months of commitment!”.

I really like the idea of a public pledge. I promised to cycle to work 3 days a week, this week I managed 5 which is a total of 120 miles!  My daughter likes the idea so much that she is trying to get her school to sign up.

Usually people are raising pledges in support of a sporting challenge or a birthday… your campaign was a little different. Tell us more…

I’m a converged system specialist (think the big racks of computers) with an international IT reseller Bechtle. I have just changed careers, I started 3 weeks ago! It’s a scary but exciting move that sees me getting out of an office and in front of customers, going back to school and doing lots of certified learning. So it’s a time where you think a little more about what you are doing and what you want out of life.

That’s a great story, and really encouraging to see that it doesn’t take running up mountains to inspire pledges!

What was the most surprising or exciting pledge someone made?

My wife pledged to give up crisps……and she is inspiring me to do the same with chocolate… but I’ve not made that pubic yet!

Ha, now you have!

If you get everyone in the country to do one of our Do Actions, which would you choose?

To stop single-use everything.  We have got so used to it we don’t even notice it anymore. I was on a work trip recently when we stopped and I couldn’t have a single use cup (it’s one of my key pledges), and was surprised that the guys that were with me suggested I got a bottle of water, because the plastic can be recycled!

Finally – any top tips you’d share with someone else raising support on Do Nation?

Remind people about the simple changes that they can make in their behaviour that will make a difference – most of my friends quite like the idea of trying the change for a couple of months.

Earn a year’s supply of ice cream!

We really like to celebrate our most enthusiastic and inspirational Doers. So each month, we reward our the person or team who collects the most pledges with 12 Ben & Jerry’s fairtrade ice cream vouchers!
